Accessibility
The Hagedorn Little Village School is committed to making this website usable by everyone, including people who browse with a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, magnify the screen, or use other assistive technology. Accessibility is central to what this school does, and we want the website to reflect that.
The standard we aim for
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. We check the site with automated testing tools and by hand, at a range of screen sizes. We treat accessibility as continuing work rather than something finished once, so this page describes where the site stands today rather than claiming it is perfect.
What the site does
- Text scales with the font size you have set in your own browser or device, so you do not have to change anything here to make it larger.
- A Display settings panel at the top of every page lets you enlarge the text, reduce motion, and underline every link, whether or not you have set those preferences on your device.
- Every page can be navigated by keyboard, with a visible focus indicator and a "Skip to main content" link.
- Colour combinations are checked against the WCAG AA contrast thresholds, and information is never conveyed by colour alone.
- The photo slideshow on the home page can be paused, and does not move at all if you have asked your device for reduced motion.
- Images carry alternative text, and the site can be read at 400% zoom without scrolling sideways.
Known limitations
We would rather tell you where the site falls short than let you discover it. These are the parts we know about:
- Embedded videos play in YouTube’s own player, whose controls and markup we do not control. The same videos can be watched directly on our YouTube channel.
- The school calendar on the Current Families page is embedded from Google Calendar and has contrast and labelling issues within Google’s own interface. If it is difficult to use, please contact the office and we will gladly give you the dates you need.
The location map on the Contact page is embedded from Google Maps, and its controls and labelling are Google's own. Our full address is written out in text on that page, just above the map, and the office is glad to give directions over the phone.
- Some documents, particularly older newspaper clippings in the Media section, are scans of printed pages. A screen reader cannot read the text inside a scanned image. Please contact us if you need the contents of any document in another form.
- The translation feature uses Google Translate, which is machine translation. It is a genuine help but it is not a certified translation, and it can get things wrong. For anything important, please ask us and we will make sure you have it correctly.
Tell us about a problem
If any part of this website is difficult or impossible for you to use, please tell us. You do not need to know why it is not working or use any particular terminology - simply describing what you were trying to do is enough, and it genuinely helps us fix it.
Email information@littlevillage.org or call 516-520-6000. If you can, mention the page you were on and what device or assistive technology you were using. We will respond and, where we can, offer another way to get the information you were looking for while we work on a fix.
